Amman: The Higher Council for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the Civil Aviation Regulatory Commission have signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at improving the travel experience for individuals with disabilities. The agreement focuses on ensuring that disabled travelers can enjoy the freedom to travel independently and with dignity.
According to Jordan News Agency, the memorandum emphasizes the importance of developing the air transport system to guarantee the accessibility of facilities, services, and information. It also aims to provide reasonable accommodations on an equal basis, in line with the Law on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities No. (20) of 2017, the Civil Aviation Law, and relevant international agreements and standards. This initiative aligns with commitments made by the Commission at the 2025 World Summit on Disability.
The memorandum was signed by HRH Prince Mired bin Raad bin Zeid, who serves as Chief Chamberlain and President of the Higher Council for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, and Captain Daifallah Al-Farajat, Chairman of the Board of Commissioners and CEO of the Civil Aviation Regulatory Commission.
During the meeting, Prince Mired emphasized the significance of inclusive tourism as a national investment. He noted that it opens new opportunities for economic growth and ensures that everyone can access the benefits offered by the tourism sector. He pointed out that failing to invest in adapting tourist destinations and services not only denies people with disabilities their right to travel but also results in lost economic and investment opportunities that could enhance the sector's growth and competitiveness within the Kingdom.
The memorandum represents a crucial step towards developing policies and procedures that govern accessibility in civil aviation services. It aims to improve the readiness of airports and service providers, ensuring equal opportunities for people with disabilities in travel and transport. This initiative also seeks to promote Jordan as an inclusive tourist destination that meets international standards.
Captain Al-Farajat highlighted that the memorandum is designed to enhance institutional cooperation between the two parties in developing policies that regulate the rights of air passengers with disabilities and people with limited mobility. It also aims to promote compliance within the civil aviation sector regarding accessibility requirements and facilitation arrangements.
