Amman: Interior Minister Mazen Faraya met with his Syrian counterpart Anas Khattab and an accompanying delegation to discuss issues of mutual interest, emphasizing the strong ties and cooperation efforts between Jordan and Syria.
According to Jordan News Agency, Faraya highlighted the visit as part of ongoing efforts to exchange expertise and enhance regional security integration. He reiterated Jordan's readiness to provide technical, operational, and human expertise to support Syria's stability and institutional capacity-building. Faraya stressed the need for continued dialogue to address shared challenges, particularly in combating drug trafficking, and called for increased coordination to curb this threat.
The Jordanian minister also addressed the importance of boosting trade, resolving obstacles affecting the movement of goods and people, and improving infrastructure at border crossings. He pointed out the need for expanded human resources, extended operating hours, and rehabilitation efforts to accommodate future trade and transport developments.
On his part, Minister Khattab expressed gratitude for Jordan's support across various fields and outlined the significant security challenges Syria faces, emphasizing the need for joint cooperation. He highlighted opportunities for further collaboration, such as enhanced intelligence sharing, development of border crossings, and joint responses to cross-border threats. Khattab also expressed interest in expanding cooperation on security training and proposed signing memoranda of understanding in areas like training female police officers and developing security personnel through exchange programs.
Both sides discussed customs and security challenges, agreeing to form a joint technical committee to address and follow up on the issues raised. They also acknowledged ongoing joint efforts to prevent drug smuggling operations.
During the visit, Khattab toured the King Abdullah II Ibn Al Hussein Training City in Muwaqqar District and other facilities, where he received a briefing on advanced training programs. The Syrian delegation also visited the Gendarmerie Forces Command to learn about its specialized roles.
The meeting in Amman was attended by Jordanian officials, including Director of Public Security Major General Obaidallah Maaytah, and Syrian officials such as Qutaiba Badawi and Khaled Barad.
