International Geological Conference to kick off in Amman Tuesday

The 11th International Geological Conference and the 10th Middle East Geology Conference, organized by the Jordanian Geologists Association (JGA), will kick off under the Royal Patronage on Tuesday in Amman. "His Majesty's patronage of the conference reflects his keenness to strengthen Jordan's position as a leading hub in earth and environmental sciences," JGA president Khaled Shawabkeh said in a statement on Saturday. He pointed to the importance of developing the mining sector and manufacturing industries to support the national economy, as expressed in the National Mining Strategy. He said the conference will discuss 120 research papers over three days and will bring together 220 researchers from several Arab and foreign countries, including Turkey, Syria, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Germany, and France, in addition to local and international official delegations. He explained that the conference will address several important topics, including the management of groundwater resources and related challenges, n atural disaster management, risk management strategies, minimizing the effects of natural disasters, and oil and gas issues in Jordan and the Arab world, with the participation of specialists and representatives of oil companies from the Gulf countries. The conference will also discuss the effects of climate change on the environment, ways to adapt and mitigate them, assessing the risks associated with seismic activity, the importance of geological education in Jordan, and the role of geological reserves in promoting sustainable tourism.
