Israel Claims Recovering Body of Captive from Gaza Amid Ongoing War

Israel: Israel claimed on Friday that it had recovered the body of a captive from the Gaza Strip. In a statement through the US social media company X, Israeli army spokesman Avichay Adraee said the body of Ilan Weiss from Kibbutz Be'eri was recovered from Gaza in a 'complex operation.' The spokesman also reported returning belongings of another unnamed individual killed in Gaza. There was no immediate comment from the Palestinian group Hamas on the Israeli claims.

According to Anadolu Agency, Israeli estimates suggest that of the over 200 individuals taken captive in the October 2023 attacks, Hamas still holds about 50 captives, including 20 believed to be alive. Meanwhile, more than 10,800 Palestinians are imprisoned in Israel. Israel has reportedly killed around 63,000 Palestinians in Gaza since October 2023. The military campaign has devastated the enclave, which is facing famine.

Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.
