Beirut: Israeli warplanes on Sunday carried out airstrikes on southern Lebanon, marking the latest violations of a ceasefire agreement in place since November 2024.
According to Anadolu Agency, the Lebanese state news agency NNA reported that at least 10 airstrikes targeted the town of Ali al-Taher, the outskirts of Kafr Tibnit, and Upper Nabatieh. The attacks caused nearby homes to shake and triggered rockfalls in the area. Additionally, large fires erupted in the forest of Ali al-Taher village, with civil defense teams facing challenges in extinguishing the flames.
The Israeli army stated that the strikes were aimed at Hezbollah underground infrastructure in southern Lebanon. Leaflets dropped by Israeli planes over the town of Aita al-Shaab warned of continued operations against Hezbollah infrastructure, declaring, 'We will keep working against Hezbollah infrastructure. We have warned you.'
No injuries were reported following the Israeli strikes. However, the ongoing military offensive, which began on October 8, 2023, escalated into a full-scale war by September 2024, resulting in over 4,000 deaths and around 17,000 injuries.
A ceasefire was reached in November, yet Israeli forces have conducted near-daily attacks in southern Lebanon, citing Hezbollah activities as the reason. Under the truce, Israel was expected to fully withdraw from southern Lebanon by January 26, but the deadline was extended to February 18 after Tel Aviv refused to comply. Israel continues to maintain a military presence at five border outposts.
