Rishon LeZion:Yair Golan, head of Israel's opposition Democratic Party, has described the killing of Iran's former supreme leader Ali Khamenei as a "mistake." This statement was made during an interview at an event in the city of Rishon LeZion, located south of Tel Aviv.
According to Anadolu Agency, Golan emphasized that Khamenei's elimination did not contribute positively to Israel's interests, even though he acknowledged that Khamenei was 86 years old and did not imply he should not have died. He stated that Khamenei's succession by his son, Mojtaba Khamenei, has resulted in Iran being led by more extreme and violent figures.
Additionally, Golan criticized Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for pursuing what he deemed an "unrealistic goal" of overthrowing the Iranian government, a goal that has not been accomplished.
The US and Israel initiated a conflict against Iran on February 28, which led to Tehran retaliating with missile and drone attacks and effectively shutting down the Strait of Hormuz. This escalation has increased regional tensions in the Middle East and driven up global energy prices due to the disruption of commercial oil traffic through the strait.
In June, Washington and Tehran signed a framework agreement, with mediation from Pakistan and Qatar, to cease hostilities and open the door for negotiations.
