Malahide: Jacob Bethell is on the brink of making history as he prepares to become the youngest captain in England men's cricket for an international match. The 21-year-old will lead an under-strength England squad in the first of three T20 internationals against Ireland at Malahide on Wednesday, stepping into a role usually held by regular white-ball captain Harry Brook, who, along with other all-format players, has been rested for these matches.
According to BBC, Bethell will break a long-standing record dating back to 1889, when Monty Bowden captained England at the age of 23 years and 144 days against South Africa. The young all-rounder expressed that while breaking the record was not initially a goal, it is a "cool stat to have." Bethell noted, "To lead the side is going to be really special. I can learn on the job without too many preconceived ideas." He also mentioned the supportive environment created by his teammates, stating, "The boys have been very welcoming and offering advice."
While Bethell is set to become England's youngest captain in an international match, Alfred Bunny Lucas remains the youngest to have ever led any England side. Lucas captained an "unrepresentative" England team in a three-day match against Gloucestershire at the age of 20 in 1877, as noted by Wisden Cricketers' Almanack.
Reflecting on his career progression, Bethell, who made his England debut just over a year ago in a T20 match against Australia, shared his excitement about the captaincy opportunity. "Looking on a year from then, I'm pretty proud of what I've done in a year and pleased I've been given this opportunity," he told reporters. He attributed his appointment to a recognition of his character as well as his cricketing skills.
As England prepares for the upcoming Ashes tour of Australia, set to begin in November, Bethell remains focused on the present series against Ireland. Despite speculation about his potential inclusion in the Ashes squad, Bethell stated, "My head's firmly screwed on to this series, I'm not thinking too far ahead." With the Ashes squad yet to be announced, he remains concentrated on his current responsibilities.
In the upcoming matches against Ireland, batter Jordan Cox is expected to fill in for Harry Brook in the middle order, while either Sonny Baker or Scott Currie will replace Jofra Archer in the bowling lineup.
