Amman: Representative of the electrical and electronics sector at the Jordan Chamber of Commerce (JCC), Hatem Zoubi, announced that demand for electrical appliances and lighting sets has been "moderate" since the beginning of 2026, compared to previous years.
According to Jordan News Agency, Zoubi mentioned that prices for these appliances have remained "stable" despite the increased operating costs, higher transportation and insurance fees, delays in the arrival of goods, and rising prices in the countries of origin caused by regional political and security tensions. He also noted a decline in sales for certain types of electrical appliances due to the cessation of credit sales by importers and wholesalers.
Zoubi explained that importers and wholesalers sometimes resort to selling at cost price to maintain supply and meet the local market's needs. He emphasized the availability of goods in "large" quantities and highlighted the "strong" competition that benefits consumers. To ensure quality, Zoubi affirmed that imported goods and equipment meet "high standards" and undergo rigorous testing and oversight by the Jordan Standards and Metrology Organization.
Furthermore, Zoubi mentioned ongoing cooperation with the Jordan Customs Department to facilitate the flow of goods and expedite transactions. He also referred to coordination with the Ministries of Industry, Trade and Supply, and Energy and Mineral Resources to address any challenges facing the sector.
Zoubi also criticized social media advertisements as "misleading," which he indicated has resulted in price manipulation negatively impacting the traditional retail sector. He described the market for electrical appliances in the Kingdom as "highly competitive" due to the "diversity" of import sources and the "large number of workers," exceeding 3,000 merchants in Amman and other governorates, providing about 25,000 job opportunities.
In closing, Zoubi highlighted the Jordan Chamber of Commerce's contact with relevant authorities to address issues facing the sector, regulate import and distribution mechanisms, and ensure the availability of high-quality, efficient, and safe goods. He stressed the significance of the electrical and electronics sector as a "cornerstone" of the Kingdom's commercial sector, urging for measures to facilitate its operations and overcome any obstacles.
