Jordan Advances Halal Standards and Trade Cooperation in Kazan Meetings

Kazan:The Jordan Standards and Metrology Organization (JSMO) took part in international meetings held in Kazan, Russia, focusing on enhancing cooperation in standards, accreditation, and metrology to improve market access for Jordanian products.

According to Jordan News Agency, Acting Director General Wafa Al-Momani led Jordan's delegation to the 21st General Assembly and 32nd Board of Directors meetings of the Standards and Metrology Institute for Islamic Countries (SMIIC) that took place from October 26 to 28 in the Republic of Tatarstan. The meetings gathered representatives from member states, as well as regional and international organizations involved in accreditation, standards, and metrology.

Al-Momani emphasized that Jordan's participation in these meetings allows the country to influence SMIIC's policies, decisions, and future work programs while ensuring alignment with national interests and priorities. She stressed the importance of developing technical requirements for halal products and services, reducing trade barriers, and facilitating access for Jordanian products to member states' markets.

The JSMO's engagement with international and regional standardization bodies is expected to bolster Jordan's national quality infrastructure and align its standards with regional and international benchmarks, thereby enhancing the competitiveness of local products. The statement also highlighted SMIIC's expanding role in advancing halal industries and promoting standards in sectors like food, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and halal tourism, which are experiencing rapid growth.

During the meetings, participants reviewed the institute's achievements and the implementation of its strategic plans, adopting the 2027-2028 executive plan aimed at strengthening trade among Islamic countries and easing the movement of goods across their markets. Progress reports from SMIIC's three permanent councils—the Standardization Management Council, Accreditation Council, and Metrology Council—were also reviewed.

The Jordanian delegation took part in the Strategy Committee and Governance Committee meetings, discussing the institute's future direction and response to global developments. Topics included regulatory and legislative frameworks, governance practices, transparency, and institutional accountability.

Jordan has been a member of SMIIC's board since its inception in 2010, being re-elected for successive terms and contributing to cooperation among member states in standardization, accreditation, and metrology.
