Jordan Agriculture Minister Highlights Water and Agriculture Initiatives at Rome Dialogue

Rome:Agriculture Minister Saeb Khreisat addressed Jordan's challenges with water scarcity and climate change impacts on agriculture at the Rome Water Dialogue 2026. He emphasized the need for integrated water management and improved water efficiency to maintain agricultural production and ensure food security.

According to Jordan News Agency, Khreisat highlighted Jordan's leadership in agricultural water-use efficiency through modern irrigation techniques. He outlined efforts by the Agriculture Ministry to promote water-saving technologies among farmers, backed by initiatives from the Agricultural Credit Corporation and international partners like the World Bank.

The minister discussed programs aimed at expanding water harvesting and optimizing rainfall utilization. In 2026, the ministry earmarked approximately JD5 million to assist over 3,500 farmers with grants for water harvesting systems, enhancing resource management and sustaining agriculture.

Khreisat also mentioned projects to construct water ponds and earthen dams in Jordan's Badia regions, supporting livestock breeders by providing closer water sources and reducing the need for long-distance travel for animal drinking water.

He urged an increased use of treated wastewater as a nonconventional water source in agriculture, stressing adherence to regulations to protect health and the environment. Jordan's role in the dialogue underscores the significance of international collaboration in sustainable water management and agricultural innovation.
