Jordan Aims to Establish Itself as a Clean Energy Hub by 2035: Energy Minister

Amman: Jordan is on track to become a regional hub for clean energy by 2035, according to Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Saleh Kharabsheh. The ministry is advancing the green hydrogen sector by implementing approximately 14 projects and exploring shared infrastructure. This initiative aims to enhance Jordan's standing in clean energy production and export.

According to Jordan News Agency, the ministry's focus is on boosting self-reliance and reducing import expenses through six initiatives and 32 priorities under the second executive program of the Economic Modernization Vision (2026-2029). The National Energy Strategy (2025-2035) is being updated to incorporate global advancements in hydrogen and energy storage technologies.

Kharabsheh's remarks were made during a panel discussion organized by the Energy Committee of the Jordan Engineers Association, titled "The Energy Sector in the Economic Modernization Vision." The discussion addressed significant future directions for Jordan's energy sector.

The minister outlined strategic projects to enhance domestic energy production, such as developing the Risha, Sarhan, and Hamza gas fields, and increasing exploration in North Risha and East Safawi. Additionally, the expansion of gas networks and their connection to the Arab Gas Pipeline will supply major cities like Amman and Zarqa, alongside industrial areas. Renewable energy projects with a combined capacity of 300 megawatts from solar and wind sources are underway, as well as energy storage projects utilizing batteries and pumped water.

The ministry is adopting a comprehensive strategy to tackle sectoral challenges, including storage solutions, regional electricity interconnection, resource optimization, and the deployment of smart meters as part of digital transformation initiatives.

The overarching goal is to generate added economic and societal value by reducing industry energy costs, supporting energy efficiency, and promoting solar water heater programs. The extension of electricity to remote areas is facilitated through the Fils Al Reef fee, and the implementation of time-of-use tariffs is intended to promote consumption efficiency and ensure fair revenue distribution.
