Jordan and Egypt Extend Electricity Exchange Contract Through 2025

AMMAN: The National Electric Power Company (NEPCO) and the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) have renewed their electricity exchange agreement, extending the partnership until 2025. This renewal aims to enhance electrical reliability and strengthen the energy infrastructure between the two nations.

According to Jordan News Agency, the agreement was signed by Sufyan Bataineh, Director General of NEPCO, and Mona Rizk, Chairperson of EETC, with the presence of Saleh Kharabsheh, the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources. Minister Kharabsheh underscored the significance of this agreement, noting its role as a regional model for electricity interconnection projects, a collaboration that has been ongoing for 25 years.

The renewed contract demonstrates a mutual commitment to advancing energy systems and promoting regional electrical integration. The agreement is expected to stabilize electrical networks, support the expansion of renewable energy, and foster sustainable development. Both parties have highlighted the importance of ongoing feasibility studies aimed at increasing the capacity of the interconnection line between Jordan and Egypt, which would further enhance energy security.

Since 1999, Jordan and Egypt have been linked by a 400-kilovolt submarine cable stretching 13 kilometers across the Gulf of Aqaba, with a capacity of 500 megawatts. This interconnection is a part of a larger eight-member regional network that includes Jordan, Egypt, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, Libya, and Turkiye.
