Jordan and ILO Launch Project to Enhance Garment Sector Labor Standards

Amman:The Ministry of Labor and the International Labour Organization (ILO) have signed an agreement to initiate the "Better Work and Labor Governance to Support Jordan's Garment Sector" project. This initiative aims to improve working conditions, protect workers' rights, and enhance labor governance within the industry.

According to Jordan News Agency, the agreement was signed by Labor Minister Nidal Qatamin and ILO Regional Director for Arab States Ruba Jaradat. The project will offer practical support to factories to ensure compliance with labor standards and bolster efforts to prevent forced labor. It also aims to promote fair recruitment and expand access to reliable worker support and representation mechanisms.

The project will include the establishment of a dedicated worker service center, focusing on aiding migrant workers and women. The framework for this cooperation builds on a previous letter of intent signed by the government and the ILO in July. It will start with a three-month preparatory phase to set up governance arrangements, complete assessments, approve work plans, and finalize monitoring mechanisms.

In addition to factory support, the project will enhance systems for handling complaints and resolving disputes. It aims to expand access to grievance and representation mechanisms, crucial for women and migrant workers. The initiative will also support the creation and activation of the National Joint Council for the Jordan Garment and Textile Industry to facilitate coordination and dialogue among stakeholders.

Labor Minister Qatamin highlighted Jordan's commitment to protecting workers' rights and improving governance in the garment sector. He emphasized the project's role in providing practical support to factories and inspection systems, ensuring tangible improvements for workers. He also noted the strategic importance of the garment and textile sector under the Economic Modernization Vision.

Ruba Jaradat reaffirmed the ILO's commitment to supporting Jordan in creating a safe and fair working environment. She noted that the ILO will work with the government, employers, and workers to strengthen labor market systems and ensure the sector’s growth focuses on decent work and long-term resilience.
