Jordan and India Strengthen Economic Ties with Prime Minister Modi’s Visit

Amman: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has embarked on a significant working trip to Jordan, underscoring the enduring and robust relations fostered by His Majesty King Abdullah II with nations worldwide. This visit is a testament to the mutual trust, cooperation, and respect that define the relationship between Amman and New Delhi, with both countries' leaderships sharing a common vision to enhance partnerships across various sectors, particularly focusing on economic and investment opportunities.

According to Jordan News Agency, the discussions during Modi's visit are set to explore the potential for heightened bilateral cooperation and the development of new partnerships aimed at fostering mutual growth and prosperity. Key areas of interest include medical technology, artificial intelligence, and digital technology. The Indian Embassy in Amman has highlighted these sectors as vital to the evolving collaboration between the two nations.

In conjunction with Modi's visit, the Jordan Chamber of Commerce is organizing a Jordanian-Indian Business Forum. Scheduled for Tuesday, the forum aims to solidify economic and trade relations between the two countries. It will feature presentations by the Ministry of Investment and Invest India, along with specialized sessions on sectors such as healthcare, information and communication technology, financial services, and chemical and fertilizer industries. This forum serves as an essential platform for exchanging expertise, exploring investment opportunities, and fostering partnerships between business leaders and institutions from both countries.

A report by the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Supply outlines several agreements and memoranda of understanding that have been pivotal in the relationship, including a trade and economic agreement signed on July 18, 1963, and a more recent economic and trade cooperation agreement signed on July 5, 2017. Furthermore, the Jordanian-Indian Joint Committee for Trade and Economy has signed a revised agreement to bolster and diversify trade, promoting investments based on equality and non-discrimination.

Trade data reveals a fluctuating economic exchange between the two nations. Jordanian exports to India decreased by 18.9 percent to JD990 million in 2024 from JD1,221.2 million in 2023. Imports from India also saw a significant decline of 39.9 percent, reaching JD660 million in 2024 compared to JD1,098 million in 2023, as reported by the Amman Chamber of Commerce. However, from January to September 2025, Jordanian exports to India increased by 27 percent to JD859.2 million, while imports decreased by 28 percent to JD374.3 million compared to the same period in the previous year.

Jordan's export opportunities to India remain expansive, with potential markets for phosphates, fertilizers, pharmaceuticals, food products like olive oil and dates, Dead Sea products, chemical products, and jewelry and precious stones. In 2024, key Jordanian exports to India included clothing, chemical fertilizers, pharmaceuticals, potash, inorganic chemicals, and various industrial goods. Conversely, India exported machinery, vehicles, electrical equipment, pharmaceuticals, and a wide array of foodstuffs and materials to Jordan.
