Amman:Jordan and South Africa are exploring ways to enhance cooperation in trade, agriculture, and tourism. Efforts are underway to increase the presence of South African products in the Jordanian market, according to South African Ambassador to Jordan, Tselane Mokuena.
According to Jordan News Agency, Ambassador Mokuena highlighted South Africa's strong production capabilities in fresh meat and citrus products. Meanwhile, Jordan provides essential fertilizers and agricultural inputs that could benefit South African farmers by improving productivity and reducing costs.
The embassy is collaborating with Jordanian importers, South African counterparts, and local authorities, including the Jordan Food and Drug Administration, Jordan Customs, and the Ministry of Agriculture, to identify opportunities for additional South African products.
Mokuena emphasized the significance of diversifying trade partnerships, especially in the face of higher tariffs and complex non-tariff barriers. She described Jordan as a vital partner and gateway to the Middle East. Her comments were made during an event hosted by the South African Embassy as part of South Africa Export Promotion Week, coinciding with the country's Heritage Month. The gathering included officials, diplomats, business representatives, and other guests.
Negotiations on several memoranda of understanding in agriculture and tourism are also underway, aiming to create new opportunities for bilateral cooperation. Mokuena noted the historical diplomatic relationship between Jordan and South Africa, established in 1994, influenced by the late President Nelson Mandela and His Majesty the late King Hussein bin Talal.
Addressing regional concerns, Mokuena reaffirmed South Africa's solidarity with the Palestinian people, highlighting the ongoing humanitarian issues in Palestine. She also expressed support for the Global Initiative to Galvanize Political Commitment to International Humanitarian Law, which Jordan will host in December.
In celebration of Heritage Month, the event featured South African cultural expressions, including traditional dishes prepared by chef Bathabile Sambo and operatic performances by tenor Mlalo Mkzwakhe Leuba and soprano Lovelinea Sathekge.
