Cairo:Jordan and Syria are working towards strengthening environmental cooperation and developing joint mechanisms to tackle climate and environmental challenges. This was discussed during a meeting between Jordan's Minister of Environment, Ayman Suleiman, and Syria's Minister of Local Administration and Environment, Mohammad Anjrani.
According to Jordan News Agency, the meeting took place on the sidelines of the Council of Arab Ministers Responsible for Environmental Affairs at the Arab League General Secretariat's headquarters. The ministers emphasized the importance of collaboration on key environmental issues, including climate change effects, drought, water scarcity adaptation, desertification, dust and sandstorm reduction, and ecosystem protection in border areas.
The discussions also highlighted the need for Arab coordination to secure international support and funding for countries deeply affected by climate change, aiming to enable these nations to access international climate funds, programs, and initiatives.
Suleiman and Anjrani agreed to draft a comprehensive memorandum of understanding between their respective ministries, planning to sign it at the upcoming COP31. This memorandum will outline a framework for cooperation in sustainable water resource management, waste management, environmental monitoring, and climate change adaptation.
Both parties reaffirmed the necessity of ongoing communication and the development of joint programs and projects to mitigate environmental risks, enhance sustainability, and support regional efforts against climate change.
