Amman: The Ministry of Digital Economy and Entrepreneurship has successfully completed the installation and operation of the e-passport public key infrastructure (PKI), along with the issuance of the official digital certificate for Jordan. The implementation of these steps is set to be approved by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), aligning with global standards and requirements. According to Jordan News Agency, Minister of Digital Economy and Entrepreneurship, Sami Smeirat, emphasized that this initiative demonstrates the government's dedication to advancing digital transformation. The minister highlighted that the objective is to provide secure and advanced services, which will lead to a significant transformation in official document services and enhance Jordan's stature in delivering e-government services that meet the highest international standards. The operation of the PKI system is part of the final preparations for the upcoming launch of the Kingdom's e-passport project. The min istry, in collaboration with the Ministry of Interior and the Civil Aviation Regulatory Commission, has been working towards securing membership for the Civil Status and Passports Department in the ICAO Public Key Directory (PKD) for electronic Machine Readable Travel Documents (eMRTDs). The issuance of e-passports is scheduled to commence at the beginning of the next year. The new passports will feature an internal encrypted chip that securely stores the holder's personal and biometric data, adhering to the highest technical and security specifications. Additionally, the e-passports will be compatible with e-gates at airports, streamlining travel procedures and saving time and effort for travelers.
