Jordan Elected to UN Human Rights Council with Strong Support

New York:Jordan has been elected to the UN Human Rights Council, reflecting global appreciation for its leadership in human rights protection and promotion under King Abdullah II, according to Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Fuad Majali.

According to Jordan News Agency, Jordan secured 171 votes in a secret ballot during the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York. This election will allow Jordan to work with member states to enhance the international human rights system, uphold the rule of law, and safeguard the rights of vulnerable populations, including women, children, and persons with disabilities.

Majali emphasized that Jordan's position on the council will provide a crucial platform to advocate for Palestinian rights, including the pursuit of self-determination and the establishment of an independent state along the June 4, 1967 lines with East Jerusalem as its capital. This will also involve addressing continuous international law violations.

He expressed gratitude to the countries supporting Jordan's candidacy, noting that the election result highlights Jordan's status in multilateral diplomacy and its dedication to dialogue and global cooperation. Majali also congratulated other nations elected to the council.

The UN Human Rights Council, headquartered in Geneva, was established by the General Assembly in 2006. It consists of 47 members and is tasked with promoting and protecting human rights worldwide, addressing violations, and issuing actionable recommendations.
