Amman: The National Centre for Agricultural Research (NCAR) and the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) on Saturday engaged in discussions focused on preserving the Alia camel breed and its genetic characteristics as part of national conservation efforts. The meeting involved NCAR Director General Zakaria Musallam and FAO Representative in Jordan Paul Obio.
According to Jordan News Agency, the meeting reviewed the current status of the Alia camel, highlighting its significance as part of Jordan's animal genetic resources. The discussions also addressed research and technical priorities for the future. Musallam emphasized the value of local breeds as a national genetic asset, citing their unique characteristics and adaptability to local conditions.
Musallam called for the application of scientific research and modern technologies to study, document, and manage these breeds in line with scientific principles. He expressed NCAR's eagerness to develop a joint framework with FAO to support national efforts related to the Alia camel. This includes enhancing cooperation and exchanging scientific and technical expertise for the conservation and management of animal genetic resources.
Paul Obio, representing FAO, highlighted the importance of preserving local breeds by protecting biodiversity and enhancing the livestock sector's resilience to climate change and environmental conditions. He affirmed FAO's commitment to supporting national efforts and providing necessary technical expertise.
