Amman: Every year, the world celebrates World Maritime Day, an occasion that sheds light on the hidden treasures of the vast oceans and raises awareness of the seas as a vital source of life. This year's celebration underscores the critical importance of maritime transport in global trade and environmental sustainability.
According to Jordan News Agency, Jordan's efforts stand out in enhancing the position of its ports as an advanced logistical system supporting sustainable development. Jordan is committed to ambitious royal visions to make the Kingdom a regional hub for green development and sustainable maritime trade. The country boasts 10 specialized ports with a handling capacity exceeding 70 million tonnes annually, 1.3 million TEUs, and 2 million passengers.
CEO of the Aqaba Development Corporation (ADC), Hussein Safadi, emphasized that Aqaba's ports are the backbone of Jordanian maritime transport. The ports comprise 10 specialized ports with 28 operational berths and marine service docks, supporting national trade by receiving diverse goods, including oil, minerals, and general cargo.
Safadi highlighted ADC's work according to the Royal directives, aiming to transform Jordan into a regional hub for green development. He noted Aqaba's strategic position on regional shipping lines, serving as a main transit point for neighboring countries. This integrated network covers containers, energy, general cargo, and industrial flows.
Director General of the Jordan Maritime Commission, Omar Dabbas, noted that the Commission plays a vital role in overseeing maritime safety and security. The Commission monitors ship compliance with safety standards and international requirements, ensuring marine environment protection. It also manages ship registration under the Jordanian flag and supervises maritime education and training.
The Jordan Shipping Association reported strong performance and growth at Aqaba Port over the past eight months, reflecting a recovery in Jordan's maritime transport sector. Secretary General Captain Mohammad Al-Dalabeeh attributed this growth to continuous efforts to enhance the competitiveness and operational capacity of Aqaba's ports.
In the broader context, International Maritime Organization (IMO) Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez emphasized the ocean's vital role in the global economy. The IMO continues its commitment to a global regulatory framework supporting cleaner and safer seas, benefitting its 176 member states.
