Amman: The Ministry of Environment launched the Roadmap for Sustainable Transport in the Tourism Sector for the years 2026-2030, aimed at promoting low-emission transport and supporting green growth within the Kingdom's vital tourist sector.
According to Jordan News Agency, the Ministry's Secretary General, Dr. Omar Arabiyat, stated at the launching ceremony that this roadmap, developed in cooperation with the Ministries of Transport, Energy and Mineral Resources, and Tourism and Antiquities, aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from tourist buses by 31% by 2030. This reduction is equivalent to approximately 9,591 tons of carbon dioxide compared to traditional operations.
Arabiyat emphasized that the roadmap reflects Jordan's commitment to achieving a balance between environmental protection and the growth of the tourist sector by transitioning to sustainable transport methods. These methods are expected to reduce emissions, generate new economic opportunities, enhance visitor experiences, support local innovation, and develop national expertise in transportation and clean energy fields.
Christophe Assicot, representative of the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) in Jordan, commended this initiative, noting that it illustrates Jordan's ambitious vision for a more sustainable future. He described the integration of clean transport into the tourism sector as a pioneering move that establishes the Kingdom as a regional role model in using environmental commitment as a catalyst for innovation and inclusive growth.
According to a ministry statement, the roadmap predicts that more than half of tourist buses will be electric-powered by 2030, with an increased reliance on renewable energy sources. This transition is expected to improve air quality, create new green job opportunities, and enhance Jordan's competitive position as a sustainable tourism destination both regionally and globally.
The statement further elaborated that the roadmap's plan includes key components such as introducing electric buses into tourist transport, expanding the renewable energy-based charging network, and mobilizing innovative financing to expedite the shift to electric transport. The initiative also seeks to promote local innovation, develop national talent, improve the tourist experience, and create sustainable green job opportunities.
The roadmap is backed by international organizations, including the GGGI, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, and the Global Environment Facility (GEF). It aligns with Jordan's Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Climate Agreement, as well as the Kingdom's Economic Modernization Vision.
The implementation of the roadmap will be overseen by the Jordanian High-Level Forum for Electric Transport, co-chaired by the Ministries of Environment, Transport, and Energy, ensuring effective implementation and stakeholder participation throughout the project's phases.
