Tashkent: The Jordan Standards and Metrology Organization (JSMO) participated in the meetings of the Standards and Metrology Institute for Islamic Countries (SMIIC) held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, from November 11-13. The meetings attracted participants from various international and regional organizations.
According to Jordan News Agency, JSMO Director General Abeer Al-Zuhair addressed the meeting, emphasizing Jordan's commitment to contributing robustly to international and regional standards and metrology organizations. Al-Zuhair highlighted the importance of supporting quality infrastructure to align Jordanian standards with international and regional peers, which in turn would enhance the competitiveness of national products, facilitate global market access, and raise compliance with quality and safety standards.
The meetings focused on reviewing the institute's achievements and the implementation and development of strategic and operational plans to support intra-Islamic trade. Additionally, discussions were held to facilitate the flow of goods within the Islamic world. The Jordanian team actively participated in SMIIC Strategic Committee and Governance Committee meetings, which deliberated on future strategic directions of the institute that align with global developments. These sessions reviewed the implementation of strategic initiatives and projects, resulting in an action plan aimed at enhancing the institute's regulatory and legislative frameworks to adopt best governance practices promoting transparency and institutional accountability.
Jordan, a member of the SMIIC Board of Directors since its establishment in 2010, has been a consistent contributor to and supporter of joint Islamic action. The country has played a significant role in promoting quality infrastructure in Islamic countries, with a particular focus on developing the halal industry and products. This includes adopting technical specifications and standards to support the growth of sectors like food, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and halal tourism.
