Jordan Sees 17% Decline in Mobile Phone Imports Amid Global Chip Price Hikes

Amman:Jordan's mobile phone imports have decreased by 17% in the first nine months of 2026, reaching approximately 1.1 million units valued at JOD 116 million. This marks a significant drop from the 1.3 million units imported during the same period in 2025.

According to Jordan News Agency, the Vision Association for Cellular Devices and Accessories released official industry figures indicating the decline in imports. The association attributed the decrease to elevated retail unit prices and constrained consumer purchasing power.

Association President Ahmed Alloush commented on the market contraction, highlighting that the rising device prices are primarily due to a global surge in memory chip costs. The increased capital expenditure by major technology firms into artificial intelligence infrastructure and data centers has tightened global semiconductor supply chains.

Alloush pointed out that memory modules, as a substantial part of hardware Bill-of-Materials (BOM) costs, have led to increased component expenditures at the OEM manufacturing level. This rise in costs has been transferred to landed import costs for Jordanian distributors, subsequently affecting local inventory turnover.
