Dubai: The Ministry of Environment and the Royal Scientific Society’s National Centre for Energy Research have been awarded the silver award for large-scale solar energy projects at the prestigious Emirates Energy 2025 Awards. This recognition took place in Dubai and highlights their EU-funded initiative to enhance agricultural sustainability in Jordan.
According to Jordan News Agency, the award-winning project involved the installation of photovoltaic systems to power agricultural water pumps in the Jordan Valley and highland areas. This initiative, developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Water and Irrigation, is designed to significantly reduce energy consumption, minimize carbon emissions, and offer economic and social support to local farmers.
The project was executed in two phases and resulted in the installation of 820 solar-powered systems. These systems collectively generate 12,280 MWh of electricity annually, leading to a reduction of 7,879 tons of CO2 emissions and providing farmers with savings of approximately JD 1.18 million each year. In addition to the economic benefits, the project has fostered the creation of over 60 green jobs and provided training in solar energy technologies to more than 940 engineers and farmers.
Raafat Assi accepted the award on behalf of Princess Sumaya bint El Hassan, while Minister of Environment Ayman Suleiman was present to receive the accolade for the project. The Emirates Energy Award, which is held every two years, is dedicated to celebrating innovation and exemplary practices in renewable energy and sustainability across the MENA region.
