Amman: United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has appointed Jordanian diplomat Eihab Omaish as Deputy Assistant Secretary-General for Counter-terrorism and Director of Policy at UN headquarters in New York, marking the first time an Arab has been named to this senior UN post.
According to Jordan News Agency, Omaish previously served as Head of the Rule of Law Unit in the Office of the Secretary-General. His career has also seen him rise through the ranks at the Jordanian Ministry of Foreign and Expatriate Affairs, achieving the position of Minister Plenipotentiary. Furthermore, Omaish held the role of Deputy Permanent Representative of Jordan to the United Nations.
