Jordanian-Syrian Free Zone sees active investment movement, says official

Director General of the Jordanian-Syrian Free Zone Company, Irfan Khasawneh, confirmed that the zone has seen a robust investment movement and a good volume of trade exchange between the two countries since its reopening at the beginning of 2022.

In remarks at the Jordanian-Syrian economic forum, currently being held in Damascus, Khasawneh indicated that the weight of goods imported to the zone during the first half of this year amounted to 45,000 tons, with a total value of more than $82 million, and around 1,950 transport trucks, highlighting that the status of about 190 companies out of 590, operating before the closure, were corrected.

Solar energy panels, foodstuffs, agricultural and construction materials, and auto spare parts were the main commodities imported to the zone in the first 6-month of 2022, he noted, adding that around 70 trucks enter the Jordanian and Syrian gates daily.

“There is a cooperation between relevant authorities to develop the investment environment in the zone to lure investors and revive its commercial and investment activity,” the official also said.

Khasawneh indicated that the zone, built on an area of 6,500 dunams, currently entails about 5,000 dunams available for investment in various industrial, commercial, agricultural, service and car showrooms, calling on those interested to visit it and take advantage of its privileges.

The Jordanian-Syrian Joint Free Zone was established in 1976, with joint capital from the two countries under an economic cooperation agreement and the regulation of trade exchange between them to be one of the pillars of joint Arab economic action.
