Jordan’s Food Strategy Aims for JOD 1.6 Billion in Exports by 2029

Amman:Jordan's National Food Industry Strategy (2027-2029) has been unveiled, aiming to transform the Kingdom's manufacturing base through increased product value addition, enhanced industrial productivity, and stronger supply chain integration to boost the global competitiveness of Jordanian food exports.

According to Jordan News Agency, the strategy, developed by the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Supply, is a key component of the Economic Modernization Vision's High-Value Industries engine. It sets ambitious fiscal benchmarks, targeting an increase in food exports from JOD 1.232 billion in 2027 to JOD 1.61 billion by 2029.

The strategy also projects an annual sectoral output of JOD 5.5 billion to JOD 5.8 billion during the same period, contributing an estimated JOD 2.2 billion to JOD 2.4 billion in overall value-add to the national economy. A key focus is on high-value goods, with goals for these commodities to comprise 32 to 35 percent of total sector output by 2029, up from about 25 percent, and to account for 45 to 50 percent of total food exports.

Priority development segments include fruit and vegetable processing, chocolate and confectionery manufacturing, ready-to-eat meals, and specialized food products. The strategy also aims to increase the use of digital management systems in food processing plants from under 20 percent to 50-60 percent by 2029.

Operational and regulatory initiatives will establish a national farm-to-factory digital traceability system, upgrade food testing laboratories, and modernize export inspection frameworks to meet international market requirements. The roadmap also emphasizes supply chain integration through expanded contract farming and the development of agro-industrial hubs to reduce post-harvest losses and enhance logistics and packaging industries.

Long-term goals for 2033 include pushing food exports to JOD 2 billion to JOD 2.2 billion, with high-value goods making up 40 to 45 percent of production. Over 80 percent of processing facilities are expected to operate on fully digitized management platforms. Execution oversight will involve a performance measurement framework to evaluate macroeconomic impact and allow adjustments based on market performance and economic shifts.
