King Abdullah II to Open Third Ordinary Session of 20th Parliament

Amman:His Majesty King Abdullah II is set to inaugurate the third ordinary session of the 20th Parliament on Monday, which includes the Senate and the House of Representatives. The King will deliver the Speech from the Throne to officially commence the session.

According to Jordan News Agency, following the Royal address, the Senate will gather to appoint members to the committee responsible for drafting its response to the Speech from the Throne. Concurrently, the House of Representatives will conduct its opening session, led by the most senior lawmaker, to elect the Permanent Bureau. This bureau consists of the Speaker, First and Second Deputies, and two Assistants.

The meeting's initial chairing will be managed under Paragraph (A) of Article 3 of the House's Internal Regulations, which designates the most senior deputy, based on previous legislative terms and age, with the assistance of the two youngest members present. Their role concludes upon the election of the Speaker.

Paragraph (A) of Article 14 states that a Speaker candidate is elected by securing an absolute majority of votes if more than two candidates are competing. If there are only two candidates, the one with the relative majority wins, and in the event of a tie, the decision is made by drawing lots.

Subsequent to these elections, the House will appoint a committee to draft a response to the Speech from the Throne, which must be approved and submitted to His Majesty within 14 days. Additionally, the House is expected to elect members to its 20 standing committees.

A Royal Decree issued on September 30 postponed the ordinary session of Parliament until November 2, 2026. Another Royal Decree subsequently called for Parliament to convene in its ordinary session starting Monday.
