French President Emanuel Macron Saturday condemned the massacre of pro-Algerian protestors who had demanded their country’s independence in 1961, describing the massacre as “inexcusable,” according to the Algeria Press Service.

A statement issued by Elysee Palace said Macron “recognized the facts: that the crimes committed that night under Maurice Papon [the then police chief] are inexcusable for the Republic,’ it added.

This marks the first time ever a French president visits the memorial of the massacre in Paris in which, according to historians, tens of people lost their lives; however, official figures downgrade the figure to three.
