Meteorite Found in Mafraq Listed by Meteoritical Society

Mafraq: The International Meteoritical Society has officially listed a meteorite discovered three years ago in Jordan's northeastern desert in Mafraq Governorate, according to its latest bulletin.

According to Jordan News Agency, fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society and member of the Arab Union for Astronomy and Space Sciences, Jordanian astronomer Emad Mujahid, revealed that the meteorite was discovered in 2022 by local resident Mohammad Shlash. Shlash noticed a rock that stood out from its surroundings, which led to its identification as a meteorite.

Laboratory analysis conducted at a specialized Spanish meteoritics lab confirmed that the find was a stony meteorite of the L5 chondrite type. This classification adds to the meteorite's significance, as it highlights its scientific value and contributes to the understanding of such celestial objects.

Mujahid shared that the public can access the International Meteoritical Society's website to view all registered meteorites found in Jordan by selecting the country from the list, with the Mafraq meteorite being a notable entry.

He further mentioned that a lunar meteorite discovered by citizen Moayad Al-Atoom three months ago in Wadi Rum is anticipated to be included in the Society's bulletin later this summer and will gain international recognition.
