Minister Discusses Key Water Projects with Green Climate Fund Officials

Amman:Water and Irrigation Minister Raed Abu Soud held discussions with the Green Climate Fund (GCF) to enhance cooperation on water projects, specifically the Jordanian National Water Carrier Project.

According to Jordan News Agency, Abu Soud met with GCF's Head for Eastern Europe, Central Asia and the Middle East, Thomas Eriksson, and Middle East and North Africa Regional Director Amjad Elmahdi, alongside Water Ministry Secretary General Jihad Mahameed. The discussions focused on the GCF's contribution to the National Carrier, which includes a total of $295 million with a $75 million grant.

The minister emphasized that these efforts align with the Economic Modernization Vision and the strategic plan for the water sector. The partnership with the GCF is seen as crucial for improving water supply efficiency, sustaining resources, and enhancing services. He also welcomed the decision to establish a new regional office in Jordan.

The meeting also covered the "Water for People and Nature" initiative, a collaboration between the GCF and the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), with an estimated cost of $1.6 billion. This initiative targets ten countries, including Jordan, and aims to secure large-scale financing from the Fund, the bank, and both public and private partners.

Elmahdi noted that Amman will become a "regional hub" for climate coordination and financing facilitation. He also expressed the GCF's readiness to broaden cooperation on new water and wastewater projects in Jordan.
