Mokhtar Ould Djay Reappointed as Mauritania’s Prime Minister

Nouakchott:Mokhtar Ould Djay has been reappointed as Mauritania's prime minister and is tasked with forming a new government.

According to Anadolu Agency, Ould Djay's reappointment was announced under a decree issued by President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani. This decision followed the resignation of Ould Djay's government, which occurred after the president received a report from an independent investigation committee.

The report investigated fires that occurred on August 21 and 22 at two main electricity substations in Nouakchott. It concluded that the fires were caused by substandard electrical connectors imported by a private company. The report assigned responsibility to the company and officials at the Energy Ministry for the incidents, which led to prolonged power outages in several parts of the city.

Ould Djay has been serving as Mauritania's prime minister since August 2024. His career includes several high-ranking state positions, such as head of the presidential office and minister of economy and finance.
