Amman:The Parliamentary Health and Food Committee, along with the Jordanian Charitable Medicine Bank (JCMB), is set to launch the "Safe Medicine, No Waste" national campaign aimed at raising awareness about the safe and rational use of medicines.
According to Jordan News Agency, the campaign is part of the Lower House's efforts to raise awareness and enact legislation supporting national initiatives to protect public health and enhance resource efficiency. Committee Chair MP Ahmad Sarahneh emphasized that drug overuse is not only a financial concern but also a health and societal issue that requires the collaboration of all relevant stakeholders.
The campaign aims to promote proper practices for using and storing medicines, prevent the overdispensing of drugs, and raise awareness about the safe disposal of unused or expired medications. Sarahneh urged health, pharmaceutical, and academic institutions, civil society organizations, and the media to support the campaign's goal of fostering a culture of rational medicine use and reducing overuse.
Committee members highlighted the importance of these initiatives in raising awareness about safe medication practices and fostering a culture of rational use. They called for unified and coordinated efforts among the various institutions and entities involved in the health and pharmaceutical sectors.
JCMB Board Chairman Ashraf Al-Kilani discussed the campaign's role in promoting community awareness on the safe and rational use of medication. He noted that reducing waste begins with citizen awareness and extends to various entities within the health and pharmaceutical systems. The Charitable Medicine Bank, in collaboration with relevant stakeholders, plans to implement awareness programs targeting different segments of society.
The announcement of the "National Week for Awareness on Drug Overuse," an annual event involving government bodies, health and pharmaceutical institutions, the academic sector, civil society organizations, and the media, was made during the meeting. This event will focus on highlighting the risks and causes of pharmaceutical waste and exploring ways to mitigate it. Participants underscored that curbing pharmaceutical waste is a shared national and societal responsibility, necessitating partnerships and promoting a culture of awareness, proper medication use, and spending efficiency.
