Officials Issue Guidelines for Best Olive Harvesting Practices in Ajloun

Ajloun: The Agriculture Directorate of Ajloun called on local farmers on Sunday to follow proper agricultural practices during the upcoming olive harvest to ensure optimal crop yield and high-quality olive oil. Directorate Director Sitan Sarhan emphasized the importance of timing and method in olive harvesting to maximize both the quantity and quality of the produce.

According to Jordan News Agency, the harvest typically runs from mid-October through November or early December, depending on fruit ripeness, weather, and olive variety. Sarhan advised farmers to closely monitor the color changes of the olives from green to purple or black and to consult with agricultural specialists to determine the ideal time for picking.

Sarhan outlined specific guidelines to aid in the harvest process. For equipment and transport, he recommended using clean tarps, hand combs, and ventilated plastic crates to ensure that the olives are not damaged during transport. He advised against using plastic bags, which can trap heat and lead to rapid spoilage of the olives.

Regarding harvesting methods, Sarhan advised that olives should be picked by hand or with light combs to protect both the trees and the fruit. He cautioned against the heavy beating of branches, which can cause damage.

In terms of sorting, Sarhan stressed the importance of keeping fallen ground olives separate from freshly picked ones, as ground fruit can degrade the quality of the oil.

For pressing and storage, Sarhan recommended transporting harvested olives to presses within 24 to 36 hours to prevent fermentation and oxidation, which can affect the oil's quality. He also advised storing the resulting oil in clean, airtight, dark containers kept in cool places away from direct heat and light.

Sarhan urged farmers to collaborate with agricultural teams and apply specialized technical advice throughout the season to maximize product quality.
