New york: Artificial intelligence company OpenAI has requested a federal judge in New York to prevent an order that would mandate the release of 20 million anonymized ChatGPT conversations. This request comes in the context of a copyright lawsuit initiated by The New York Times and other media organizations.
According to Anadolu Agency, OpenAI, in a recent court filing, described the demand for ChatGPT logs as a significant breach of user privacy. The company claims that a vast majority-99.99%-of the transcripts are unrelated to the copyright infringement allegations. Dane Stuckey, OpenAI's chief information security officer, criticized the request, arguing it disregards established privacy protections and contradicts standard security practices.
The court filing emphasized concerns regarding privacy, suggesting that global users of ChatGPT over the past three years might have their personal conversations subjected to scrutiny by The New York Times. OpenAI contends that this demand could lead to an unfounded and speculative examination of user data.
On the other hand, the media outlets involved assert that the ChatGPT logs are essential to verify whether the AI tool unlawfully reproduced copyrighted content. They also aim to challenge OpenAI's assertion that the chatbot was manipulated to generate evidence against it.
The lawsuit accuses OpenAI of using copyrighted news articles without authorization to train ChatGPT. Stuckey highlighted the historical role of journalism in upholding privacy rights globally, arguing that the current demand by The New York Times contradicts that legacy. OpenAI is urging the court to dismiss the request for the logs.
