Amman: The Lower House Foreign Affairs Committee, led by MP Dina Basheer, held a meeting with European Union Ambassador to Jordan, Pierre-Christophe Chatzisavas, to discuss the strengthening of bilateral relations and explore avenues for enhanced cooperation between Jordan and the EU.
According to Jordan News Agency, the committee members highlighted the efforts of His Majesty King Abdullah II, along with global leaders, in reviving the comprehensive peace process aimed at resolving the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, based on the two-state solution. The MPs emphasized the importance of the Jordan-EU partnership and the need to expand collaboration across multiple sectors.
MPs Ibrahim Tarawneh, Mohammad Aqel, Rakin Abu Haniyeh, Tamara Nasser Al-Din, and Nour Abu Ghosh reiterated Jordan's stance against forced displacement and any initiatives to establish a Palestinian state outside the occupied territories. They also expressed support for Syria's reconstruction efforts and creating conditions that facilitate the voluntary return of Syrian refugees.
The lawmakers acknowledged the European support for the Hashemite custodianship over Jerusalem's Islamic and Christian holy sites and the EU's backing of King Abdullah II's efforts in defending the Palestinian cause. Stressing the potential of the Jordan-EU partnership, they noted its capacity to foster economic growth, attract investment, and support critical sectors.
Meanwhile, Ambassador Chatzisavas affirmed that Jordan and the EU would maintain their diplomatic engagement to align positions on significant international matters. He emphasized the importance of fully implementing the new strategic partnership, focusing on political, defense, trade, and development cooperation, and addressing the refugee crisis to maximize the benefits of the £3 billion support package.
