Accra:The Pentagon has increased the official count of US troop deaths linked to military operations against Iran to 21.
According to Anadolu Agency, this adjustment includes two additional fatalities that were not previously reported. The Defense Casualty Analysis System now reflects the updated number of deaths, which includes Maj. Sorffly Davius, 46, an Army National Guard member who died in Kuwait on March 6, and an unidentified Navy service member who died by suicide in September.
The revised figures also indicate that 865 US service members have been wounded during these operations. In a separate incident, the military confirmed the unrelated death of Sgt. Devin A. Seibel, 26, who died in Iraq in May during a training accident associated with Operation Inherent Resolve, the US military's campaign against ISIS.
Two senior Democrats from the House Armed Services Committee, Rep. Adam Smith of Washington and Rep. Chrissy Houlahan of Pennsylvania, expressed their approval of the Pentagon's correction. They criticized the initial omission as a significant error and described the need for congressional intervention as an embarrassment for the military.
In response to inquiries, the Pentagon did not directly address the updated death toll but highlighted changes to its casualty reporting system, including a new "pending adjudication" category for records still under review. The Pentagon emphasized its dedication to transparent and accurate reporting of all service member casualties.
