Ankara: Turkish parliament speaker Numan Kurtulmus has emphasized the importance of a terror-free Trkiye as a pivotal step towards establishing peace and stability throughout the region. He stated that eliminating terrorism in Trkiye could lead to a terror-free Syria and positively impact neighboring countries, including Iraq.
According to Anadolu Agency, Kurtulmus outlined the process as a "historic responsibility" for the current generation, urging political leaders to fulfill their duties responsibly. He expressed optimism that if successful, the initiative would foster an "atmosphere of tremendous peace," enabling stronger regional ties.
Kurtulmus highlighted that peace would enhance economic, cultural, and political connections, potentially accelerating development projects such as Iraq's Development Road Project and aiding Syria's recovery. He also noted that normalized relations between Trkiye and Syria could boost regional trade and cooperation.
The speaker underscored the necessity of eliminating terrorism's root causes, stressing the need for the PKK to expedite its disarmament and dissolution. The PKK, recognized as a terrorist organization by Trkiye, the US, and the EU, has taken steps towards disbanding, with 30 members surrendering and destroying their weapons in Iraq's Sulaymaniyah province.
Kurtulmus also discussed the role of the National Solidarity, Brotherhood, and Democracy Committee in shaping Trkiye's post-terror transition. The committee's goal is to confirm the PKK's dissolution and propose recommendations for the future, without drafting legislation or a new constitution.
He acknowledged the committee's diverse representation and thanked Anadolu for hosting its inaugural press conference. The commission aims to complete its work by December 31, 2025, but may extend its timeline if necessary.
Kurtulmus also addressed regional concerns, criticizing Israel's aggressive policies and their impact on regional stability. He reaffirmed Trkiye's support for the Palestinian cause and urged measures to eliminate ethnic and sectarian divisions. He advocated for a unitary system in Syria that ensures equal representation and a democratic transition.
