Amman: Prime Minister Jafar Hassan announced the government's commitment to reducing public debt to 80% of GDP by 2028, as part of broader efforts to focus on national priorities and bolster economic resilience. During a Cabinet meeting held in Amman Governorate, he emphasized the importance of economic modernization as a key pillar of national strength.
According to Jordan News Agency, Hassan reaffirmed the government's dedication to advancing comprehensive modernization across political, economic, and administrative domains. The Cabinet meeting is part of a series aimed at assessing development priorities across provinces and ensuring project alignment with local visions. Hassan highlighted plans to secure parliamentary approval for the 2026 budget by year's end to facilitate timely implementation of capital projects.
Economic indicators showed improvement with GDP growth, increased foreign direct investment, and a rise in national exports and tourism revenues. The Amman Stock Exchange has also reached its highest level in 15 years, reflecting investor confidence. Hassan stressed the government's strategy to reduce public debt from 93% to 80% of GDP by 2028, emphasizing the economy's solid foundations.
To advance infrastructure in Amman, Hassan unveiled the Amman Governorate Development Vision, including the Jabal Al-Qalaa Cable Car Project and the reopening of Amman Civil Airport. Key transport projects are also underway, including BRT system extensions and feasibility studies for a new elevated bridge.
Water infrastructure investments amounting to JD300 million are planned over the next three years, alongside the construction of 38 new public schools and modernization plans for Al-Bashir Hospital. The government also plans to develop long-term urban plans in collaboration with the Housing and Urban Development Corporation to accommodate future population growth.
Hassan emphasized legislative priorities, including submitting the General Budget Law to Parliament and addressing regional challenges, particularly the humanitarian situation in Gaza. He concluded by highlighting Jordan's diplomatic efforts for a lasting ceasefire and global recognition of a Palestinian state.
