Political, Security Issues Lead Jordan’s 2024 Rumor Count

Amman: The Jordan Media Credibility Monitor (AKEED) documented a total of 891 rumors in 2024, with an average of 74 rumors circulating each month both locally and internationally.

According to Jordan News Agency, regional events and conflicts played a significant role in the proliferation of these rumors. The war on Gaza and the West Bank, along with developments in Syria and Lebanon, were responsible for 456 rumors, making up 51.2 percent of the total rumors recorded. The Israeli military campaign on Gaza, which began in October 2023, was a major contributor, sparking 322 rumors throughout 2024 as the conflict continued and escalated.

Social issues across various domains, including economic and political spheres, accounted for the remaining 435 rumors. Within this category, political rumors were the most prevalent, totaling 288 cases or 32 percent of the overall count. Security-related rumors followed closely with 232 cases, comprising 26 percent, while rumors related to social issues numbered 185, making up 21 percent.

Economic rumors were also noted, with 123 cases, representing 14 percent. General affairs rumors accounted for 49 cases, or 5.5 percent, and health-related rumors were the least frequent, with only 14 cases, contributing to 1.5 percent of the total.

The report highlighted that social media platforms were the primary source of these rumors, generating 779 cases, which equates to 87 percent. In contrast, media outlets were responsible for 112 rumors, accounting for 13 percent of the total.
