Jawa: Chair of the Higher Council for Science and Technology Prince El Hassan bin Talal has inaugurated the Safawi Educational Centre for Soilless Agriculture and Innovation in Jordan's Northeastern Badia. The center, located in the Jawa region, aims to promote innovative agricultural practices and foster scientific research in the area.
According to Jordan News Agency, Prince El Hassan toured the centre's facilities at the Safawi station, which include areas dedicated to hydroponic and suspended agriculture. He also inspected renovated historical buildings housing seed storage rooms, scientific research areas, and climate monitoring equipment. The facility also showcases exhibitions of environmentally friendly handicrafts and herbicide-free desert plants.
During his visit, Prince El Hassan emphasized the importance of fostering collaboration in agricultural and scientific research through partnerships and cumulative national efforts. He stressed the need for increased coordination in agricultural projects and advocated for documenting the outcomes of expert consultations to shape future solutions to environmental challenges. "These consultative meetings," he remarked, "should enhance the exchange of ideas, knowledge, and wisdom and lead to shared scientific solutions for environmental issues."
Prince El Hassan also urged the transformation of agricultural research into practical, economically viable projects that can benefit communities vulnerable to climate change. He highlighted the significance of prioritizing the agricultural sector in investment plans to position it as a key driver of sustainable economic development. Furthermore, he called for the establishment of a comprehensive, knowledge-based information database linking historical and modern agricultural practices.
The Prince advocated for integrated cooperation across the water, food, energy, and biosystems sectors and emphasized the importance of empowering women in agriculture. He also supported youth-led initiatives and the passing down of agricultural knowledge and heritage to future generations. He underscored the relevance of studying historical agricultural practices to develop sustainable responses to today's climate challenges and strengthen future climate resilience.
Mohammed Wadiyan, Director of the National Centre for Research and Development, highlighted that the centre is implementing various awareness and development projects, including hydroponic and suspended agriculture, rainwater harvesting, and the cultivation of native desert plants. He reiterated the centre's commitment to supporting local communities.
The inauguration event was attended by agricultural experts, academics, archaeologists, and several current and former military officials.
