Amman: The Ophthalmology Department at Princess Basma Teaching Hospital has successfully performed its first Ahmed glaucoma valve implantation surgery, marking a milestone for the facility.
According to Jordan News Agency, Dr. Nisreen Makhadmeh, head of the hospital's ophthalmology department, stated that the procedure represents a significant shift in the quality of care provided to patients. Previously, patients suffering from complex eye conditions had to be transferred to other hospitals for specialized treatment.
Ophthalmologist Dr. Murad Al-Zoubi explained that the surgery was performed on a patient with severe, refractory high intraocular pressure that had not responded to medications and laser treatments. The patient also had severe adhesions in the eye's drainage angle due to diabetic retinopathy. The valve was implanted to preserve the patient's vision despite the complexity of the case.
Dr. Waleed Al-Halabi, director of Princess Basma Hospital, emphasized that the achievement was the result of collaborative teamwork among ophthalmologists, anesthesiologists, nursing staff, technicians, and administrators committed to patient safety and quality care.
