Amman:The Water Diplomacy Center at Jordan University of Science and Technology (JUST) has initiated a regional training workshop focused on transboundary climate diplomacy, integrated water resources management, disaster risk reduction, and nature-based solutions. The event, running until October 14, includes participants from countries involved in the Blue Peace Middle East initiative, aiming to enhance regional capacity in mitigating the impacts of climate change on shared water resources.
According to Jordan News Agency, the workshop is part of the Blue Peace Middle East Capacity Development Project and is supported by the Swiss government through the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation.
JUST Vice President Ahmad Ajlouni emphasized the challenges of climate change and water scarcity, noting their effects on water and food security, sustainable development, and regional stability. He also highlighted the Water Diplomacy Center's role in integrating scientific knowledge with policy and development, while fostering regional dialogue and cooperation.
Center Director Mutawakel Obeidat pointed out that the workshop facilitates the exchange of expertise among specialists and practitioners, focusing on the climate-water-security nexus. He stressed the necessity of cross-border cooperation to address risks impacting shared river basins and groundwater resources.
Mufleh Alawin, a representative from the Swiss Embassy, discussed Switzerland's collaboration with the university and the center, emphasizing the center's growth as a regional hub for water diplomacy and the need to build on the successes of the project's first phase.
