Shamayleh Highlights Jordan’s Human Rights Commitment on UN Day

Amman:Commissioner-General for Human Rights, Jamal Shamayleh, emphasized that United Nations Day, celebrated annually on October 24, serves as an opportunity to reaffirm commitment to the principles of the UN Charter. This includes respect for human dignity and fundamental rights, maintaining international peace and security, and fostering cooperation among nations.

According to Jordan News Agency, Shamayleh highlighted that this year marks the 81st anniversary of the UN Charter's entry into force. He reiterated Jordan's dedication to the UN Charter since joining the United Nations in 1955, noting the country's active engagement with the international human rights treaty system.

Shamayleh remarked that the UN Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights together form the foundational framework for global efforts to protect rights and freedoms. He stressed the importance of multilateral action, grounded in the rule of law, as the most effective means to address shared challenges such as conflicts, humanitarian crises, hate speech, and inequality.

Locally, he affirmed that the National Centre for Human Rights (NCHR) continues to fulfill its mandate to monitor, promote, and protect human rights. The NCHR works closely with national institutions and United Nations entities, including the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

Looking ahead, Shamayleh urged all official bodies, civil society organizations, and media outlets to collaborate in promoting a culture of human rights and raising awareness of the UN Charter's principles and values. He underscored that these efforts are crucial for building a society governed by justice and equality, where everyone's rights are upheld without discrimination.

He concluded by affirming the center's commitment to carrying out its duties in line with its legal mandate and international standards, considering the protection of human rights as a shared responsibility and an essential foundation for development and stability.
