Amman: The number of agricultural workers covered by social security reached 18,761 by the end of January, up from 5,988 in 2020, following the implementation of the Agricultural Workers System in 2021, according to a statement by the Ministry of Labor's spokesperson, Muhammad Zayoud.
According to Jordan News Agency, the number of agricultural holdings covered by social security also increased significantly, rising to 2,009 by the end of January, compared to 313 in 2020. Zayoud attributed this growth to the enforcement of the Agricultural Workers System, which initially mandated social security coverage for agricultural holdings employing more than three workers. However, recent amendments now require coverage from the first worker employed in a holding.
He underscored the Ministry of Labor's efforts, in coordination with the Social Security Corporation, to strengthen protections for agricultural workers and alleviate financial burdens on farmers. Under the system, each worker benefits from work injury and maternity insurance, with an annual cost not exceeding JD96 per worker.
Zayoud reiterated the Ministry of Labor's commitment to sustaining the agricultural sector, enhancing its productivity, and making it more attractive to Jordanian workers. He noted that the 2021 Agricultural Workers System was introduced to improve sector regulations, ensure fair labor practices, and safeguard workers' rights. The system governs employment contracts, working hours, rest periods, wages, and occupational safety, while also ensuring proper housing and preventing work-related hazards and diseases.
