Karak: Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Imad Hijazin has announced plans to develop archaeological and tourism sites in the Karak Governorate. The announcement follows his recent visit to two significant sites: the Museum of the Lowest Place on Earth and Lot's Cave, situated in Ghor es-Safi, south of the Dead Sea.
According to Jordan News Agency, Hijazin emphasized the ministry's commitment to leveraging the region's natural and environmental assets to boost tourism. He highlighted the importance of involving local communities in these projects to enhance their incomes and generate employment opportunities.
Director of the Karak Antiquities Department, Mohammad Tarawneh, provided insights into the museum's features. The museum boasts a central exhibition hall, an education space, conservation labs, storage rooms, a library, and a caf©. Additionally, it has a gift shop run by local residents and accommodation facilities for archaeological teams. The museum was developed in collaboration with Greek archaeologist Konstantinos Politis and designed by Jordanian architect George Hakim, inspired by the local fossilized ammonite shells.
During his visit, Hijazin was joined by Department of Antiquities Director General Fawzi Abu Danna and museum director Jamila Ishtaiwi. The team reviewed ongoing projects and assessed the readiness of the sites to welcome visitors both from within and outside the Kingdom.
