Ankara: Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has issued a stark warning that Israel's ongoing military actions in Gaza and Palestine possess the potential to ignite a broader regional conflict. Speaking at an extraordinary session of the Turkish parliament dedicated to the situation in Gaza, Fidan accused Israel of committing genocide and neglecting fundamental humanitarian values.
According to Anadolu Agency, Fidan announced that Trkiye has taken significant measures in response to the situation, including ceasing all trade with Israel, closing its airspace to Israeli aircraft, and prohibiting Turkish ships from docking at Israeli ports. He strongly opposed any proposals that involve the displacement of Palestinians from Gaza, labeling such plans as invalid.
Fidan highlighted that international support for Israel is waning, with the country becoming increasingly isolated, relying predominantly on U.S. backing. He emphasized the importance of halting arms transfers to Israel and noted that Trkiye, along with 52 other countries, has initiated an international campaign at the UN to end the supply of weapons that sustain Israel's military actions.
Furthermore, Fidan outlined Trkiye's active role in ceasefire negotiations, utilizing both intelligence and diplomacy to facilitate a prompt ceasefire and pave the way for lasting peace. He noted that Trkiye's efforts have contributed to several countries, including the United Kingdom, France, and Canada, recognizing the State of Palestine, marking a significant shift in international diplomacy concerning the Palestinian issue.
The Turkish foreign minister underscored the severity of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, describing the atrocities as one of humanity's darkest chapters. He characterized the Palestinian resistance as a transformative struggle that challenges the current international order.
In addition to diplomatic efforts, Trkiye has collaborated with Jordan to prepare for potential aid airdrops to Gaza. Fidan stated that despite the challenges, Trkiye is ready to provide necessary support, pending Jordan's approval to use its airspace.
Fidan also condemned Israel's regional military actions in Lebanon, Yemen, Syria, and Iran, labeling them as indicative of a terrorist state mentality. He reaffirmed Trkiye's commitment to protecting Syria's territorial integrity and called for international action against Israel, including suspension from organizations like the UN, until it ceases its current policies.
The humanitarian situation in Gaza remains dire, with over half a million people facing starvation and more than half of the population experiencing acute food insecurity. The conflict has resulted in a significant loss of life and devastation in the region.
As of May 2024, Trkiye has completely halted trade with Israel, marking a significant shift in economic relations between the two nations. This decision followed a gradual reduction in trade over several months, culminating in a total suspension of exports, imports, and transit trade.
