Brussels: A Turkish general has been appointed to a director-level position at NATO's International Military Headquarters in Brussels, marking a historic first for Turkey in the alliance. The country's National Defense Ministry announced the appointment during a press briefing led by ministry spokesman Zeki Akturk at the Humanitarian Aid Brigade Command.
According to Anadolu Agency, Akturk highlighted that this appointment underscores Turkey's active role and strong contributions to NATO's peace and security efforts. "For the security of NATO and the Euro-Atlantic region, our country -- just as in the past -- continues to make significant and decisive contributions today and will do so in the future," Akturk stated. He further emphasized Turkey's commitment to fulfilling its new command duties in strict adherence to NATO and UN resolutions, maintaining neutrality and transparency as per international obligations.
Akturk also revealed Turkey's ongoing leadership in NATO's Kosovo Force, with the country set to resume command in October 2025, following its existing term from 2023 to 2024.
In addressing maritime concerns, ministry sources responded to inquiries about the drilling vessel VALARIS DS-9 and the Greek Cypriot Administration of Southern Cyprus (GCASC) issuing a NAVTEX for Block 5 in the Eastern Mediterranean. They clarified that no new NAVTEX had been issued for Block 5, which partially overlaps with Turkey's officially declared continental shelf. The sources assured that any violation of Turkey's maritime boundaries would be promptly countered.
Regarding Israeli airstrikes over Syria, ministry sources criticized the actions as destabilizing. They urged reliance on official statements amidst reports of heightened tensions between Israel and Syria. The sources reiterated Turkey's disapproval of Israel's operations in Syria, aligning with the United Nations' condemnation of the attacks and calls for cessation. Coordination continues with local elements to ensure the safety of activities in the region, following a request from Syria's new government.
