Ukraine Stresses Importance of Its Role and Strong Decisions at Upcoming NATO Summit

Kyiv: Ukraine must take part in NATO's summit in the Netherlands later this month, where strong decisions are also necessary, Kyiv said Tuesday. 'We emphasize that not only Ukraine's participation is needed, but also a strong decision from this summit,' Foreign Ministry spokesman Heorhii Tykhyi told a press briefing in the capital Kyiv.

According to Anadolu Agency, Tykhyi highlighted the significance of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's invitation to the summit in The Hague on June 24-25. He described the invitation as 'important' and stressed the need for the summit to convey a message of strength and unity, especially concerning Ukraine. Tykhyi asserted that a NATO summit is incomplete without Kyiv's involvement, citing the ongoing security challenges posed by the Russia-Ukraine war as a primary concern for the alliance.

Tykhyi revealed that Zelenskyy has also received invitations to attend the upcoming EU and G7 summits, though his participation will be determined as the dates approach. He mentioned that it is 'too early' to discuss a new round of direct negotiations between Russia and Ukraine in Istanbul, following the talks held last week. While the humanitarian aspect of the negotiations is progressing, a lack of adequate international pressure on Russia is impeding the political discussions.

Tykhyi emphasized the necessity of exerting pressure for progress on the political and diplomatic fronts, stating that there are no other viable options. He also disclosed that Ukraine is engaged in active dialogue with the US regarding the purchase of weapons, including Patriot air defense systems. Tykhyi expressed confidence in finding solutions that would enable Ukraine to acquire the necessary American weapons, equipment, and licenses.
