Kyiv: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced a strategic shift in the nation's intelligence leadership by appointing Foreign Intelligence Service chief Oleh Ivashchenko to the military intelligence agency. This move is aimed at bolstering efforts to diminish Russia's military capabilities.
According to Anadolu Agency, Zelenskyy stated on Telegram that Ivashchenko would now serve within the Defense Intelligence of Ukraine, focusing on tasks to limit Russia's military potential. This transition follows Kyrylo Budanov's recent move to lead the office of the president, leaving the Main Intelligence Directorate (GUR) without a head.
Presidential Communications Advisor Dmytro Lytvyn confirmed Ivashchenko's impending appointment as the new head of military intelligence but noted that several procedures remain before the transition is complete. As of now, the official decree for Ivashchenko's new role has not been published.
In a related development, President Zelenskyy announced the resignation of Serhii Deineko as head of the State Border Guard Service. Deineko's departure comes after a six-year tenure, and Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko is expected to propose candidates for his successor soon. Despite stepping down, Deineko will continue to serve within the ministry's system.
Additionally, Zelenskyy emphasized ongoing strategies to curtail Moscow's economic influence, particularly in oil exports. He asserted that reducing Russia's economic potential is crucial, as it would enhance diplomatic opportunities. Russian oil exports are targeted for further restrictions and price reductions as part of these strategies.
